Simon Whedbee is a Research Associate with the Gibbons Institute for Human Ecology. He has taught Latin and Classics at Loyola University New Orleans as well as medieval literature, history, philosophy, and theology at the University of Toronto. He graduated with a BA in English Literature from Loyola University New Orleans before completing an MA and PhD in Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto, Centre for Medieval Studies.
His research interests are Latin school commentaries on classical literature and the Bible. Current research projects include: Glosses on Vergil’s Georgics attributed to Hilary of Orléans; the biblical exegesis of Peter Lombard, Peter Comestor, and Stephen Langton; and the formation of the biblical Glossa ordinaria in the twelfth century. In addition to his research into medieval Latin texts and manuscripts, he is also currently at work on a translation and sourcing project (“The Glossa Ordinaria: Translation and Annotation of the Standard Medieval Bible Commentary”), funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Studied with Sylvester Tan, SJ, and Oliver Ranner at Loyola University New Orleans; Studied with Alexander Andrée (thesis supervisor), Giulio Silano, and Robert Sweetman at the University of Toronto. Mentored by Mark Clark (Catholic University of America).
